Some places are photographed for their landmarks. Others are photographed for the feeling they leave behind. Nikiszowiec belongs to the second category.
Seen from above, its distinctive red brick architecture creates a pattern that feels almost timeless. The streets, courtyards and buildings fit together with a precision that is difficult to find in modern urban spaces. From a drone perspective, the district reveals its true character. What seems like individual buildings from the ground becomes a carefully designed composition.
One frame places the church at the heart of the neighbourhood, surrounded by rows of red brick buildings that naturally guide the eye towards it. Another focuses on the historic water tower, a reminder of the district’s industrial roots that still stands proudly above the surrounding architecture.
Built in the early twentieth century as a workers settlement for coal miners, Nikiszowiec was designed as a self contained community. More than a century later, its original character remains remarkably intact. From above, the district still reflects the vision of its planners, with orderly blocks, inner courtyards and carefully arranged spaces creating a remarkable sense of unity.
The higher perspective also reveals a contrast between past and present. The uniform red brick estate stretches across the foreground while the modern city appears in the distance. Neither dominates the image. Instead, they exist side by side, telling the story of how cities evolve while still preserving parts of their identity.
The late sunlight adds another layer to the photographs. Warm light catches the textures of the brickwork and highlights the geometry of the estate, revealing details that often go unnoticed from street level.
Perhaps that is what makes photographing Nikiszowiec so fascinating. These images are not only about architecture. They are also about continuity, where every rooftop, courtyard and historic structure contributes to a larger visual story.
