Elephants At Home was not created out of convenience, but out of conviction. After years of working with elephants in the city, Mr.Athiwat chose a different path to bring them back to where they truly belong. This land is not only their home, but the elephants’ true home as well, a place where forest, water, and natural food exist in balance. Here, far from the stress and limitations of tourist camps, elephants live without chains, without riding, and without being forced into human expectations. They live as they should, freely, peacefully, and with dignity.

That decision was shaped by experience. In the past, a mother elephant and her calf became seriously ill from contaminated food and had to spend six months in an elephant hospital. It was a turning point. It revealed the reality of environments where elephants are exposed to stress, poor nutrition, and unnatural conditions. From that moment family of Mr. Athiwat knew there had to be another way, one that puts the well-being of the animal above everything else.

Their philosophy is simple, but uncompromising. Animals are not here to serve people. Each elephant has its own personality, emotions, and limits, and deserves to be treated with respect. Instead of bringing elephants to tourists, they invite people into the elephants world. There are no performances, no control, no exploitation. Only quiet interaction, learning, and presence in nature.

Life here follows the rhythm of the forest. Each morning begins by walking into the mountains to find the elephants, feeding them, and guiding them to water. When visitors are present, they are welcomed into this natural routine, feeding the elephants, walking beside them, and experiencing their world without disturbing it. They move together through the forest to the waterfall, where elephants bathe, play, and rest. At the end of the day, the elephants return to the forest on their own, free to roam, forage, and sleep where they choose. They are not managed, they are respected like family.

This place is different by design. There are no shelters or enclosures at night, no confinement, and no separation from nature. The surrounding forest provides a rich and diverse environment, and the community itself is rooted in Karen culture, a way of life deeply connected to nature, respect, and coexistence. It is not only about protecting elephants, but also preserving a relationship between people, animals, and land that has existed for generations.

But true freedom comes with responsibility. During the dry season, the forest cannot always provide enough. Grass and leaves dry out, and elephants, who only eat fresh and green food, must be supported. This means traveling long distances to gather food, transporting it back, and ensuring that every animal receives proper nutrition. Monthly costs cover essential needs such as staff and food transport, but the greater effort lies in long-term sustainability, planting grass and banana trees to secure a future where food is always available.

The elephants who live here carry their own stories. Some, like Mae Mo, once worked in logging, carrying heavy loads in harsh conditions. Others have experienced illness caused by human environments. Today, they live differently, surrounded by space, family, and care. They are gentle, playful, sometimes shy or independent, each with a distinct personality that is respected, not controlled.
